NOVATACH™ Peptide-coupled Alginates

NOVATACH™ peptide-coupled alginates are designed to facilitate and promote interactions between cells and alginate-based scaffolds or matrices. NOVATACH™ peptide-coupled alginates are particularly useful when cell-to-matrix interactions are beneficial and for cell immobilization. 

Chemistry

NOVATACH™ peptide-coupled alginates are obtained from PRONOVA® UltraPure Alginates that have been modified to covalently graft peptide sequences.

Properties

Cell interaction with biomaterials is mediated through trans-membrane receptors that recognize adhesion molecules at material surfaces. The RGD peptide sequence is a most common example of such adhesion ligand. It has been shown that NOVATACH™ MVG GRGDSP successfully initiates biological interactions between alginate hydrogels and cells [1].

RGD-alginate NOVATACH™ improves in-vivo cartilage formation in mice. Bovine Articular Chondrocytes (BAC) grown in alginate gives an inhomogeneous and loose structure (left). BAC grown in RGD-alginate gives a homogeneous and firm structure (middle) and display significantly higher growth rate than BAC in alginate alone (left).

Successful engineering of tissue constructs may one day allow routine replacement of damaged organs and tissues. PRONOVA® UP Alginates are well-established medical polymers to form matrices for cells or tissue in regenerative medicine. NOVATACH™ peptide-coupled alginates have a promising potential in a variety of biomedical applications, including in cell scaffolds for tissue engineering.
